Volunteer of the Week: Fern Revzin

Volunteer of the Week: Fern Revzin

Tue Nov 29th

Fern was a very early member of the Rosendale Theatre Collective. She and her sister donated the money to buy the theater’s digital projector. She has been a regular volunteer at all of the Collective’s fund raisers and now coordinates Rosendale Theatre memberships.  She also volunteers at the movies as ticket taker, concession seller, and whatever else is needed.  She is invaluable!

When did you first come to the Rosendale Theatre?

In December, I will have my house 15 years, so I guess I came to the theatre 15 years ago.  The tickets cost $3 then, I think & I became a Rosendale Theatre ‘groupie.’   I have shared this story before, even at my mother’s  funeral last November.  I would bring my mother to the theatre when she was visiting and Fanny Cacchio would be in the ticket booth.  My mother ‘prided herself’ in walking out of movies she didn’t like.  One time in Rosendale, I can’t remember the movie, my mother started figitting & muttering & I knew what was about to happen–she walked out!  I knew she couldn’t go far so I watched the end of the movie & when it was over, there was Mom chatting with Fanny & holding a ticket in her hand. Fanny had returned her ticket saying she didn’t want anyone to be unhappy with a movie shown at the Rosendale Theatre!  Fond memories….

Why do you volunteer at the Rosendale Theatre?

I did inherit the ‘volunteer gene’ from my mother who was a huge volunteer & I give back whenever I can for all different causes and programs.  As soon as I heard that the Rosendale Theatre Collective was created to save my beloved theatre, I immediately got involved. I helped at numerous fund raisers in various capacities as we all worked towards the initial down payment & I have been involved ever since.  Not long before my mother passed away, my sister and I donated the digital projector for the theatre in memory of our Dad who was a projectionist.  For the past year, I have been coordinating membership & I volunteer at the theatre whenever I can.

Cinemas In Solidarity

Cinemas In Solidarity

Thu Nov 10th

Across the globe, as people are taking to the streets to redefine and reclaim the world they live in, Cinemas In Solidarity join with them in proposing a new, different, and better world.
We, too, are the 99%.

In our mass-mediated world – where studios make endless sequels to sell tickets, where films treat audiences like consumers rather than thinkers, where news stations flood screens with spin, and where technology drives the act of viewing to become more individuated and less public – we work to create alternatives.

Visit Cinema in Solidarity’s Facebook Page

Believing in film’s power to inspire, inform, unite, and incite, we work to show movies that move people. By showing artistically groundbreaking work, we remind people there are always new ways to tell a story. By showing foreign films, we offer insights into worlds and perspectives many viewers may never see first-hand. And by showing documentaries, we challenge the static speed of the 24-hour news station.

None of this, of course, makes us any richer. Staffed by artists, intellectuals, workers, and dreamers, Indy cinemas generally attract people willing to accept little money in exchange for playful, gratifying, and value-driven work. We do what we do because we believe our screens do more than show great films; they perform a valuable public function. They allow people to get out of their houses, see something in common, and talk to each other. Film by film, topic by topic, we work to expand people’s horizons and bring otherwise disparate communities together.

Today, when digital movies are available at the click of a button and Indy cinemas are fighting to get people in their seats, the future of arthouse exhibition doesn’t always look bright. But as we continue to work with community groups, filmmakers, teachers, and activists, and as we play our films week after week to a core of returning film buffs, we know we’re doing something important for the people we reach. We know we have to keep our doors open.

So we stand in solidarity – with occupiers everywhere and with each other. As institutions trying to create something different, something new and meaningful for ourselves and for our publics, we’re occupying the world we’re in every day.

New Poster-Sized Calendar Sponsored by RollMagazine.com

Tue Oct 25th

Tom Grasso and his dog Fred are at the theater to hang our new poster-sized, full-color calendar sponsored by RollMagazine.com.  Tom is a volunteer on our Marketing Committee and thought, “It will be nice to have a beautiful color poster with the schedule displayed outside of the theater.” We agreed, but didn’t have it in the budget to pay for it each month.  A couple of days later Tom and his partners at Roll Magazine agreed to sponsor the Monthly Calendar themselves.   Click here to view and download the monthly calendar on our website.
